When a young woman vanishes without a trace from a quaint fishing village on the coast of England, only one person knows the truth, but he remains silent allowing the authorities to search for her in vain.

Meanwhile, Valerie Crane finds herself transported to the year 1605. Terrified and confused, she turns for help to the Whitfield brothers, who take her in and offer her a home. Both Alexander and Finlay Whitfield fall in love with the mysterious woman, who shows up on their doorstep, creating a love triangle that threatens to consume them all. Valerie must make her choice, deciding between the brother who will lead her down the path of destruction, or one who will give her a love she couldn’t find in her own time.

I bought this book after having finished "The Passage" which I enjoyed thoroughly and wouldn't hesitate to give it a five star rating.

This book, however is a huge disappointment. While the overall storyline is interesting, the overall plot is full of predictable and silly situations: The heroine goes back in time to a castle where two handsome, eligible brothers vie for her attention....not very original. Big surprise, there's a ball, and of course, the heroine is the most beautiful woman there in an exquisite gown which matches the color of her violet eyes, which of course, was purchased by one of the handsome brothers. And on go the silly predictable scenes.

Worst of all, I felt as some of the other reviewers: The "romantic" scenes are overdone and crude at best. These scenes almost seem added after the fact and not in keeping with the characters involved, much less the historical period. One of the reviewers commented something like they are 'constantly at it'. I felt this way as well.

I had to put the book down about three quarters of the way through it. Rather than it being a book that I couldn't put down, this is one, I can't pick back up.

I agree with many of the reviewers with the lower star ratings: Yes, it is cliché, predictable, even silly, historically poorly researched and cheaply and crudely romanticized. I wanted to love this book, but for me, it just didn't live up to all the great reviews it received.

I'm quite sure if I had read a sample of it, as I do with all my kindle purchases, I would never have purchased this. Then again, it was only $2.99 and as they say, " You get what you pay for".

The Hands of Time The Hands of Time Book 1 edition by Irina Shapiro Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I enjoyed the romance and the history lesson about the Guy Fawkes gunpowder plot but I did not like that the author did not do her homework in one area. She had a Catholic in 1605 reciting the Our Father, otherwise called in Latin the Pater Noster, in English, which a Catholic would never have recited it in anything but Latin. It was the Protestants that said their prayers in English, which is partly what made them Protestants! Bothered me.
I'm not a historian nor do I particularly enjoy all of history and the study of history so I'm not going to pretend to be a published Arthur or published historian. I read to enjoy the story line, the characters and the type of story that the author writes. This was not the perfect time line or story of another time travel series it was a great first book in a time travel series. I'm not comparing two separate authors or fantacy fiction with historical fact. This is a well written story and I enjoyed it very much. I will continue reading this series and most likely read all of Irinas books. I believe many opinions written about this book series are written forgetting that this is first fiction and that to begin with gives total license to the author from word one. Yes I enjoy some leval of historical correctness and appreciate an authors researching history but I've read books where the author was so consumed with historical accuracy that the story line was lost and the characters were no longer the focus of a fictitious story but a history lesson that I did not buy the book for. Had I wanted a history lesson I would not have read a fictitious book! Please keep in mind when purchasing this book it is a story of love and survival in a difficult time and an entertaining story from an authors mind. I'm looking forward to the developing of these characters with twist and turns from the plot. Thank you Irina for having the courage to write your time travel series after other authors who have experienced grate acclaim writing on this subject, it took great courage to tackle a series on this story line. I am looking forward to book 2!
PS I'm legally blind so any misspelled words are totally my oversight.
I received this book free from one of the book sites. I do not remember which one! This is my honest review.
The story is nicely done, things happen to rev up quickly! Lots of possibilities for further books based on side characters. I would be interested in more about Bridget...what happens with her? Her children? I really think that there could be a good story there.
History wise I loved it! To involve treason & torture, described with little hesitation was interesting to read. Sea travel was done well & the mode of time travel was quite different.
I noticed a lot of typos or names being flipped, and that disturbed the flow of my reading, otherwise I would have probably given this book a 4 star rating.
The idea was good. The method of time travel was very interesting. What lost it for me was the relationship between Valerie, Alec, and Finn. I feel like her relationship and feelings for Finn were fake and superficial. Alec was the most thought out character. Finn was interesting there and showed promise.a few supporting characters were ok. The book had a lot of promise but fell flat. There were some good twists, but overall the book was very predictable. I read this to completion, but not sure if I'd buy the rest of the series. But dont let this series turn you off of the author all together. She has some excellent books, mainly Precious Bones and the Wonderland Series.
In the process of reading all of the books in the series, so far all have been wonderful. These books bring you back in time and tell a lovely story. I'm a real softy for saga type of books. In this day an age sometimes it feel really good to go back in time....you can really appreciate what you have in our Century. Good reading. Good Author
Nothing surprising happened (except for odd sexual experiences peppered throughout.) Weak plot and unbelievable characters. There were also historical errors...
Just giving a heads up for those who might be looking for a clean read. Keep looking.
